German tank destroyer “Marder III”

The Marder III, the subject of this volume, was produced from 1942 to 1944 in three main variants: the initial version armed with the Soviet 76.2 mm F-22 gun (captured and converted into the Pak 36(r)), and the subsequent Ausf. H and Ausf. M, both armed with the German-produced 7.5 cm PaK 40. Vehicles of the “Marder” family, including those based on the Panzer 38(t) chassis, served on all fronts until the end of the war, alongside the better-known Marder IIs built on the Panzer II chassis. In these pages, we will trace the complete history of this extraordinary tank, from its design origins to its evolution, from its battlefield performance to its structural weaknesses, through to its use in the final stages of the conflict and its legacy in the postwar period.
